What started Welcome Mama was my need to having a place that listed the stuff that no one else was including. It kind of drove me bonkers that I needed to go to one of my local mama facebook groups to find a pediatrician who would support our parenting decisions. I didn't love having to try 3 different pediatricians before finding one that understood what a probiotics did! I'd see women post questions about natural birth and watched other women recommend abysmal providers, some who had deplorable track records. And each time I'd think: why hasn't anyone started a directory for this kind of stuff?! So I did it with the support of some really great friends. I wanted this to be different and to truly include and embrace holistic elements of parenting. And most importantly, I wanted a space for resources that you just could not find anywhere else.
How much more holistic can you get than by teaching your own kids?
I don't homeschool, but as a former teacher, I have really appreciated learning more about it from my friends who do. I was shocked to learn (that I know of!) that there are currently no other websites that include the incredible homeschooling cooperative learning groups in WNY! Can you believe that? You probably won't believe it once you learn about how many there are right here in Buffalo. Their philosophies and personal beliefs differ, with so many different kinds of families taking the leap and homeschooling. And get this, there are many local museums now offering special rates for families looking to supplement their kids' learning experiences. So stay tuned. I'm working my fanny off on putting together a great page dedicated to resources for our local homeschooling community. I can't wait to share it with you.
